Project 3.2 in the electric mobility showcase of Niedersachsen

Information-Service for certification and standardization

The market success and market penetration of new technologies often is promoted by uniform standards. For manufacturers standards provide confidence that a market for a new technology exists reducing the risk to develop and produce new products without demand. Furthermore potential users can be sure that investing in the new technology is secured in the long run as different manufacturers are offering compatible and competitive solutions. This was true for mobile phones, for the internet and especially will be true for electric mobility.

However, standardization in this area is particularly complex, since three sectors must cooperate, which previously hardly worked together: car manufacturers, IT industry and energy suppliers. The development of standards requires the cooperation of all participating partners, the contextual coordination among the partners and the joint involvement in standardization committees. These factors are crucial for the acceptance of standards and for other applications which are based on these standards. One example for an important standard is the plug type at the charging stations. The objective in this case is that each electric vehicle can use the same charging station regardless of its type and make. Furthermore this standard simplifies and promotes the roll-out of charging station infrastructure.

NavCert GmbH – a subsidiary of OECON group – therefore performs necessary analyses and derives recommendations for standards in order to achieve a wide acceptance of electric vehicles.
